Iran Unveils Absurd New Stealth DroneLast week Iran unveiled the brand-new Hamaseh Stealth and Combat Drone. You can see it above.Note the non-retractable landing gear and externally carried missiles. However stealthy the Hamaseh's bulbous head may appear exposed landing gear missiles and a push propeller are the opposite of stealth. Why? Because they stick out from the drone in a way that catches radio waves and makes them visible to radar.For contrast here is the U.S. Navy's state-of-the-art X-47B stealth drone in flight. With the landing gear retracted into a smooth belly there are hardly any broad perpendicular edges for enemy radar to detect. There is no tail which which would catch radar as well and it's propelled by an integrated jet engine not an exterior propeller. The X-47B carries weapons in two internal bays. All of these features lead to a smooth design and a minimal radar profile.This wouldn't be the first time Iran announced a stealth vehicle or a drone with capabilities it couldn't prove. Stealth is a bad word in itself as it should be called something like radar signature reduction and has nothing to do with most stealth concepts. That`s like calling a space probe a star ship. Of course the word stealth sells much better towards Washington politicians. Since rockets are incredible expensive it might be better to have 2 dozen cheap but different kinds of mission drones instead of 1 very expensive all purpose one for the same prize. Washington is 16.7 Trillion in debt already and to keep on to existing capabilities for the army in a time of austerity it needs enough cheap and flexible options. Sure companies would like to sell expensive weapons to Washington. YOU BET. It`s also about training and real life experience and total money for the army to buy enough operational and support equipment to keep things going. Countries like Russia and Iran are therefor much less capable then they pretend to be. Just like Iraq was much less capable then they pretended to be. It`s the total state of the army and capabilities that count.The only way this drone is stealth is if Iran also claims to have a cloaking device on-board.Whats it going to be Iran?
